Eric Adams’ job prospects in Trump admin all but dead as NYC mayoral race nears, sources say: ‘It’s a mess’

Eric Adams’ job prospects in Donald Trump’s administration are seemingly dead in the water, with the president only appearing willing to poach the Big Apple mayor if GOP mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa comes along, insiders told The Post.

The fading chances came as speculation swirled over whether Adams would score a sit-down with Trump at Yankee Stadium during Thursday night’s game to directly suss out the president’s thinking.

“The only way he’ll offer Adams a gig would be if both (the mayor and Sliwa) got out of the race,” said a source with knowledge of Trump’s inner circle’s thinking.

“Adams’ stock is too low to offer him anything. Adams wants to meet more with Trump than Trump needs to meet with him,” the source said. “Every day that goes by he becomes less desirable to hire.”

The White House’s unprecedented interjection into New York City’s mayoral race aims to thwart socialist frontrunner Zohran Mamdani’s election by making it a one-on-one contest with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the socialist frontrunner’s most formidable opponent.

But Adams is also no longer actively considering a Trump-linked job, sources said — an incentive that would have seen him drop his long-shot re-election bid.

He is listening to any job offer floated by Trump’s allies, but sees little advantage of taking one and resigning before the November election, one source said.

Adams also fielding at least one private sector job offer to work at Related Companies, which is run by Cuomo backer Jeff Blau — also with the aim of getting him to drop out.

“What’s the difference between doing it now and Jan. 1?” the source said, describing Adams’ thinking. “He’s going to be on the ballot anyway.”

The president, during a Tuesday appearance on “Sid and Friends in the Morning,” acknowledged that even if the push worked, Cuomo would still be a “long shot” as polls show Mamdani winning in a head-to-head contest.

He then cast doubt that Adams — whom he said didn’t know well, despite taking credit for helping with the “problem” of Hizzoner’s federal corruption indictment — would drop out.

“I read where he has no intention of getting out,” Trump said.

“Cuomo I do know, but I would say this anybody is better than you know what… We’re going to have a communist mayor in New York.”

Adams has publicly insisted that he’s staying in the race, but his campaign is secretly pulling together a poll to gauge his chances — with an eye toward potentially withdrawing next month, according to sources.

The mayor said as much to private roundtable of city leaders this week, NBC4 reported — an assessment that his campaign spokesman Todd Shapiro denied.

“He never alluded to leaving the race,” Shapiro said. “He clearly indicated that he will be spending resources to get his message out and will then look at his own independent poll to make a decision. Nothing he said should give any indication that he has abandoned the race.”

Sliwa has also refused to drop out.

Adams polled at a putrid 7% in a recent Emerson College/PIX11/The Hill survey. Mamdani captured 43% from voters, compared to 28% for Cuomo and 10% for Sliwa.

The prospect of a Trump administration landing spot such as an ambassadorship to Saudi Arabia for Adams mostly arose from the meddling of national political operatives concerned that the mayor’s continued presence in the mayoral race would guarantee Mamdani’s ascension to City Hall, the sources said.

Operatives such as Steve Witkoff, the president’s special envoy to the Middle East, parachuted into the race with a Hail Mary plan to engineer a head-to-head race between Mamdani and Cuomo, sources said.

But those interlopers had little-to-no understanding of how difficult it would be for Adams to get off November’s ballot under New York law, which would require him to resign and move from the city, sources said.

The ballots are set to be printed Tuesday.

“It’s a mess,” a source close to the situation said. “You have some many powerful people who only care about New York City politics for four months every four years.”
