Jason Collins, longtime NBA player and first active openly gay athlete, has brain tumor


Longtime NBA player Jason Collins is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, his family announced on Thursday.

Collins, 46, played 13 seasons in the NBA, starting and ending his career with the Nets.

“NBA Ambassador and 13-year NBA veteran Jason Collins is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor,” the NBA said in a statement. “Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being.”

Collins came out as gay in 2013, becoming the first active athlete to do so.

“If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand,” Collins said at the time.

Collins got married to longtime partner Brunson Green in June.
