The heartbreaking reason Tommy Fleetwood’s wife, stepson missed Tour Championship
Tommy Fleetwood’s family was very much top of mind last month when he captured his first-ever PGA Tour victory at the Tour Championship, even though some loved ones weren’t physically present to witness the $10 million FedEx Cup win.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday ahead of the BMW PGA Championship, the Englishman was asked about his family’s whereabouts during the victorious weekend in Atlanta, revealing his stepson was recovering from major surgery and that his wife, Clare, was aiding in the recovery.

“Our middle boy, Mo [Murray], had a spinal operation just over a month ago now. So they were unable to travel,” Fleetwood said. “Actually, the week of Memphis, they were in the hospital and he was recovering, and then eventually got home just before we got home. He had three and a half weeks in the hospital, so that’s why they weren’t there, but Oscar came out to be with me.”
Fleetwood, 34, was overcome with emotion in late August when he defeated Americans Patrick Cantlay and Russell Henley by three strokes in the Tour Championship, cementing his name atop the leaderboard for the first time since joining the Tour in 2018.
The world No. 6 was joined by stepson Oscar at East Lake Golf Club, where he proudly held up the FedEx Cup trophy.
It was reported at the time that Clare, 57, Fleetwood’s wife of eight years, was watching from home.
Oscar and Murray are Clare’s sons from a previous marriage. She shares son Franklin with Fleetwood.
Fleetwood relayed to the media that Murray will be in attendance at the BMW PGA Championship this week, per reports.
The DP World Tour event tees off Thursday at the Wentworth Club in England and runs through Sunday.
Fleetwood will contend at the Ryder Cup later this month as one of the six automatic qualifiers for Team Europe.
He is two years removed from Team Europe’s 2023 triumph in Italy.
