49ers looking for new QB after troubling Brock Purdy injury update

Brock Purdy’s injury situation is concerning enough that the 49ers would like to bring in another quarterback.

At the moment, however, they appear to be stuck with two healthy signal-callers.

While revealing that Purdy’s shoulder and toe injuries make him a “long shot” to play Sunday against the Saints and could sideline him for multiple weeks, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed on Wednesday his desire to add to his quarterback room.

“We’d love to have three guys in the building ready to go,” Shanahan told reporters. “We’ve got some roster issues where we just can’t bring one in right away.”

That leaves Patriots draft bust Mac Jones as the starter and Adrian Martinez, whom the Niners signed to their practice squad in late August after he was waived by the Jets, as their backup.

Seventh-round rookie Kurtis Rourke is on the non-football injury list while recovering from a torn ACL and is expected to miss the 2025 season.

Jones, 27, spent last season with the Jaguars as Trevor Lawrence’s backup after getting traded by the Patriots. He appeared in 10 games and started seven, finishing the 2024 campaign with 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

The No. 15 overall pick in 2021, Jones got off to a promising start in New England, earning a Pro Bowl nod as a rookie while throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

But things quickly spiraled, and by his third season, he had fallen out of favor with Bill Belichick, who was in his last year coaching the team.

Martinez, 25, has yet to play in an NFL game.

Purdy signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension with the 49ers during the offseason.
