Brock Purdy unlikely for Week 2 as 49ers turn to Mac Jones
The 49ers could be without Brock Purdy for a while.
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that the quarterback is a “long shot to play” in Week 2 as he deals with left shoulder and toe injuries.

Shanahan added that the maladies could keep Purdy out multiple weeks.
The toe injury, suffered during a scramble against the Seahawks, is reportedly the biggest issue for Purdy.
“We’re not sure,” Shanahan said of Purdy’s status on Tuesday. “We have to see how it heals and how the week goes on it.”
Despite the injuries, Purdy played well during the 49ers’ first game of the season on Sunday, orchestrating a game-winning drive when he threw a four-yard TD pass to Jake Tonges with 1:34 to secure a 17-13 win over the Seahawks.
He went 26-for-35 for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Mac Jones is expected to be the 49ers’ starting quarterback if Purdy can’t go on Sunday against the Saints in New Orleans.
Jones, a 2021 first-round pick by New England, has started 49 total career games between the Patriots and Jaguars.
Shanahan spoke highly of Jones, who signed with San Francisco in March to be Purdy’s backup, earlier this week.
“I think he’s gotten really used to what we do,” Shanahan said. “He had a little setback there the last couple weeks at camp with the injury that he got. But he had a good week of practice last week, picking up really right where he left off. If he has to go this week, he’ll lead the guys, the guys will believe in him and I know he’ll do his job at a high level.”
The Athletic reported that the 49ers also gave former Jets fan favorite Mike White a tryout on Tuesday.
Purdy’s injuries are a major blow to a 49ers team that just placed star tight end George Kittle on injury reserve after he suffered a hamstring injury during Week 1.
Wide receiver Jauan Jennings is also dealing with a shoulder injury, although is said to have “avoided any significant injury” and could play on Sunday.
Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey was also dealing with a calf injury before their season opener but took the field and looked healthy doing so, going for 69 yards on the ground and 73 yards through the air.
