The sequel to the pair’s 2015 fantasy film will see Caine reprise his role as the 36th Dolan, Variety confirmed on Monday.
The Post has reached out to Caine’s rep for comment.
“The Last Witch Hunter 2” is being produced by Lionsgate and Diesel’s production company, One Race Films.
“‘The Last Witch Hunter’ has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement. “That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world.”
“Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry,” Fogelson continued. “I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”
Directed by Breck Eisner, “The Last Witch Hunter” follows an immortal witch hunter (Diesel) who, with the help of a priest (Caine), tries to stop a plague from destroying the world.
The cast also includes Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Julie Engelbrecht.
The sequel will be Caine’s first move since he announced his retirement from acting at age 90 in 2023.
He shared the news while promoting his film “The Great Escaper,” about a World War II veteran who breaks out of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary commemoration of D-Day in France.
“I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well, I am now,” Caine said on BBC Radio 4’s Today show at the time.
“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men,” the Oscar winner went on.
“And I thought, well I might as well leave with all this — what have I got to do to beat this?” Caine added.
The “Dark Knight” actor has maintained a close bond with Diesel, 58, over the years.
“Vin’s special. I love Vin,” Caine wrote in his memoir, “Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over,” released in March. “We first met at a dinner party about thirty years ago. I just instinctively greeted him with a hug and announced to the whole room, ‘This is my son!’”
“Sometimes, you sense a connection. I just liked the guy immediately, he has a big heart,” Caine added about Diesel. “We’ve been great friends ever since.”
