Move over mixtapes, Spotify users can now slide into each other’s DMs to share songs — but not everyone is happy
You used to make mixtapes for your crush; now you can slide into their Spotify DMs by sharing a song.
The music streaming platform has introduced a new “Messages” feature that allows users to share music, podcasts and audiobooks with others without having to leave the app.

The feature will start rolling out to both free and premium users aged 16 years and older in “select markets” this week, according to a press release.
Messages can be used by tapping the share icon when in the Now Playing view and selecting a friend to share the content with.
People will be able to share and start messages with people they share a Spotify plan with or users they’ve previously interacted with through Spotify via Jams, Blends or Collaborative Playlists.
Once you accept a message request, you can react with emojis, respond with text and share content back and forth. Messages can be accessed by going to your profile in the top left corner of your mobile app.
Users can also reject a request, block users or opt out of Messages entirely.
Spotify said that “users have told us they want a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks they’re excited about with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations” — but it appears any users are unhappy about the news.
“Who actually wants this? I have zero desire to use Spotify for anything other than listening to music,” one X user said.
“I speak for everyone when I say we don’t need this feature,” another complained.
“Can we please not have this?” a third begged. “We don’t need every app to be a chatting app.”
“I’d rather send my friends a link to my playlist on every social media platform than having to DM my friends via Spotify,” someone said.
“This is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard,” an additional hater tartly said.
