The school was quickly placed under a lockdown as frantic students inside sought cover and started reaching out to their parents.
Cops arrived to find one student with multiple stab wounds and another with non-life-threatening injuries, the Phoenix Police Department wrote on X.
The critically injured student was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died.
The second injured boy was arrested in connection with the stabbing.
An investigation is ongoing.
Police also didn’t specify how the surviving student was injured.
While authorities tackled the grisly scene, school officials tried to placate terrified parents and told them not to come to the site.
Still, when students finally filed out of the school, an army of parents was waiting just beyond the police caution tape to retrieve their children.
“He texted and said, ‘Mom, something happened at school. We’re on lockdown. ‘I said, ’I’m coming,’” Veronica Lizarrega, a parent waiting for her son, told Fox 10 Phoenix.
“Even having to send that text message. I mean, it’s something you thought you’d never have to do.”
The school will have counselors available to students and staff and will operate on a modified schedule on Wednesday, officials said.
“The death of a student as the result of a stabbing at Maryvale High School is a terrible tragedy. Schools must be safe places. The on-campus school safety officer responded immediately, rendered aid to the student, and did his job well. This terrible incident reinforces my commitment to doing everything possible to make schools safe,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne said.
Maryvale High School started its academic year on Aug. 4, according to its calendar.
