Long Island casino slapped with lawsuit for failing to stop near-fatal shooting

A Long Island resident was savagely shot outside Jake’s 58 last year — and he’s now holding the Suffolk County casino’s “lax security” responsible for his brush with death. 

Steffan Bumpers, of Wyandanch, was nearly killed outside the Islandia casino parking lot when 24-year-old Nashawn Legros pumped several rounds into him, while the establishment, the court filing claims, did little to protect him.

Legros was sitting in a parked car on May 31, 2024, when he saw Bumpers, 33, approaching the entrance, according to prosecutors.

Legros, also of Wyandanch, allegedly got out of the vehicle and opened fire on Bumpers — striking him twice in the chest and stomach — before jumping in a stolen car and speeding off. 

The litigation accused the gambling hotspot for “negligence, carelessness, and recklessness” over its allegedly lax security, poor staffing and inadequate training.

“We believe the security the casino had readily available was inadequate,” Bumpers’ attorney Scott Odierno told The Post. 

Every casino should be prepared for these kinds of incidents, especially ones located in places like Islandia — with high crime rates, Odierno said.

Bleeding heavily, Bumpers somehow managed to make it through the casino’s front doors before collapsing inside, where stunned patrons and staff rushed to help until medics arrived. 

The victim was rushed into emergency surgery and survived, but his injuries have left him unable to work and reliant on a cane, the court filings allege.

Suffolk OTB — the public benefit corporation which owns Jake’s 58 — and Suffolk County are named defendants in the litigation, which was filed in Suffolk Supreme Court on Friday.

Bumpers is also suing Legros separately.

Odierno told The Post his client claims not to have known Legros prior to the shooting, although the pair live a few blocks from each other, property records show.

Police have called the shooting a “targeted” attack, but did not offer any additional information. 

Bumpers, who is seeking a jury trail in the filing against the casino and county, previously spent six months in prison on drug charges.

Both the county and Suffolk OTB have declined The Post’s requests for comment. 

Legros is due back in court on Aug. 22.
