Elderly Long Island man locked up after claiming to be FBI to dodge traffic ticket: cops


He’s old enough to know better.

An 84-year-old Long Island man tried to get out of an upstate traffic ticket by claiming he’s a retired FBI agent — and instead ended up behind bars, state police said Monday.

Earl Broomall of Nassau County was pulled over on Columbia Turnpike in Rensselaer County shortly before 10 a.m. May 22 on a traffic violation, according to a press release from state troopers.

It’s not clear what the violation involved, but the statement said, “During the stop Broomall displayed a law enforcement badge and advised the trooper he was a retired FBI agent.

“The investigation determined Broomall was never employed by the FBI or was ever certified as a law enforcement officer.”

Troopers charged Broomall with first-degree criminal impersonation — and also charged him with the traffic violations he tried to get out of, police said.

The faux fed was arraigned in Schodack Town Court and ordered held without bail at the Rensselaer County Correctional Facility, according to state police.

In March, a 46-year-old Queens man was also charged with impersonating a federal immigration agent to fleece a woman seeking a green card out of $500,000, prosecutors said.

In January 2024, a 46-year-old man claiming he was an NYPD detective and flashing a phony badge confronted fare-beaters at a Lower Manhattan station and even pepper-sprayed them before he was busted by the real cops.
