St. John’s plans to run ‘point-less system’ with roster full of talent



On one possession, Dillon Mitchell soared for the defensive rebound. Upon gathering it, the transfer forward from Cincinnati took off with the ball. 

The next time downcourt, it was Kelvin Odih’s turn, then Bryce Hopkins. Seemingly everyone had the opportunity to initiate offense, some — like Oziyah Sellers, Ian Jackson and Dylan Darling — more than others.

There was no looking for a point guard, because with this group, Rick Pitino doesn’t think the Johnnies need a primary ball handler. 

“We just realized that we have so many good athletes that we’re going to run a point-less system,” the Hall of Fame coach said after St. John’s held open practice on Tuesday inside Carnesecca Arena. “So everybody handles the ball, everybody passes the ball. Ian obviously will play a one or a two when he’s in the game, but they’re all interchangeable parts.
