“While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… Season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop,” he explained, noting that he, series star and executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker, HBO CEO Casey Bloys, and HBO Max’s Head of Originals Sarah Aubrey “decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12 episodes.”
The series debuted in late 2021 — 17 years after Sex and the City‘s series finale and 11 years after Sex and the City 2‘s 2010 theatrical release — and featured the return of Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon‘s Miranda Hobbes, and Kristin Davis‘ Charlotte York-Goldenblatt. Series alums Mario Cantone (who plays Anthony Marentino), John Corbett (who plays Aidan Shaw), and Evan Handler (who plays Harry Goldenblatt ) were along for the ride, too, as the show also welcomed series regulars Nicole Ari Parker and Sarita Choudhury as Lisa Todd Wexley and Seema Patel .
The news arrives after Thursday night’s (July 31) release of Season 3, Episode 10, “Better Than Sex,” which saw things finally happen (you can read to find out what, exactly) between Carrie and Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake).
In his statement, King shared that he and Parker “held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season.”
“It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years,” he concluded.
Parker paid homage to the franchise and her Emmy-winning role with a video and touching tribute on Instagram, while Davis shared King’s statement, lamenting that she is “profoundly sad.”
“I love our whole beautiful cast and crew. 400 artisans working so hard on our show with deep love. And to our loyal fans, we love you forever and ever. ❤️,” Davis added.
And Just Like That… Seasons 1 and 2, as well as the first 10 episodes of And Just Like That… Season 3, are streaming on HBO Max. The series finale will be released on Thursday, Aug. 14.
