California tsunami waves hit northern coast near Crescent City and San Francisco Bay after striking Hawaii



The first tsunami waves have hit mainland United States on Wednesday morning in Northern California, the National Weather Service Eureka announced.

Waves struck the coastline near Crescent City and Humboldt Bay just before 1 a.m. local time Wednesday.

“Waves will continue to build in through the night and will become more dangerous as we approach high tide. Stay away from beaches!,” NWS warned.

Tsunami waves were recorded in the bay area near Monterey at 12:48 a.m., NWS Bay Area reported.

The waves traveled across the Pacific Ocean after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatsky on Russia’s far east Kamchatka Peninsula.
