Aaron Judge officially on IL as Yankees activate Amed Rosario

Aaron Judge is officially on the shelf.

The Yankees placed the two-time AL MVP on the 10-day injured list Sunday, a day after he was diagnosed with a right flexor strain.

Judge’s spot on the active roster was filled before Sunday’s finale against the Phillies by utilityman Amed Rosario, whom the Yankees acquired in a trade with the Nationals on Saturday night.

The ex-Met plays both the infield and outfield, giving the Yankees some insurance beyond their new starting outfield of Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Jasson Domínguez.

There had been cries from the fan base for top prospect Spencer Jones to be called up to replace Judge, but the red-hot center fielder missed Friday and Saturday’s games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with back spasms.

He is also not yet on the 40-man roster, and with the Yankees expected to make more trades in the coming days ahead of Thursday’s deadline, they need to keep some flexibility with opening spots on the 40-man.

Everson Pereira and Bryan De La Cruz are the two Triple-A outfielders that are on the 40-man roster. The Yankees could have opted to bring one of them up in addition to activating Rosario, but doing so would have meant designating Oswald Peraza for assignment. That may still happen in the coming days or weeks, but for now, the Yankees are keeping their depth.

As for Judge, the Yankees are hoping that they have dodged a bullet by Saturday’s MRI revealing the elbow flexor strain and not any UCL damage. They believe he could come off the IL after a minimum stay and then strictly DH upon his return before beginning to ramp up his throwing.

The Yankees on Sunday also called up lefty Brent Headrick as a fresh arm for a battered bullpen after optioning Allan Winans on Saturday night.
