The 1997 original movie starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray Bronson, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Helen Shivers, Ryan Phillippe as Barry William Cox, and the entertainment host’s ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Love Hewitt, as Julie James.
Twenty-eight years later, they created another flick for the franchise with Prinze, 49, Hewitt, 46, and a new cast. Gellar and Phillippe’s characters died in the original movie.
During his segment, Daly pulled up a picture of the Prinze and Gellar, 48, from the original 1997 premiere, as well as a shot of them during Monday night’s premiere.
The real-life married couple first met on the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie set, but didn’t start dating until 2000.
While Daly was showing the pics of Prinze and Gellar, Savannah Guthrie couldn’t help but bring up another relationship during that time period.
“Were you at that premiere?” Guthrie asked, while Jenna Bush Hager echoed her co-host’s sentiments, inquiring, “Did you go to that premiere?”
When Daly slyly responded, “I’m not sure. I can’t remember 30 years ago,” Guthrie clapped back, “We know what you did that summer.”
“Yeah, I’ve heard the jokes,” Daly laughed back. “I’m aware.”
The anchor then told viewers to “Google it” as Daly labeled his co-hosts a “tough crowd.”
The “Voice” host and Hewitt dated for a year in the late ’90s.
Daly did not attend the October 1997 carpet, but was at the premiere of 1998’s “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.”
Both stars have since moved on romantically. Hewitt tied the knot with her “Client List” co-star, Brian Hallisay, in 2013. The couple shares three kids: Autumn, 11, Atticus, 10, and Aidan, 3.
Daly has been married to Siri Pinter since 2015. They are parents to Jackson, 16, Etta, 12, and London, 10, and Goldie, 5.
Despite the former talk show host not mentioning Hewitt during the segment, the actress dazzled on the red carpet at Monday’s movie premiere.
The “Ghost Whisperer” alum rocked a new ginger-colored ‘do and a long, black Rachel Gilbert dress embellished with jewels.
The original movie followed a group of four friends who accidentally kill a man. One year later, they’re stalked by a hook-wielding killer.
Along with a blast from the past, the franchise added a slew of new faces to the sequel, including Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Lola Tung, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, although the last two stars’ roles were slashed for editing purposes.
This time around, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” follows five friends who “inadvertently cause a deadly car accident” before they “cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences,” per Sony Pictures.
However, “a year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”
In April, Hewitt got candid on re-joining the franchise.
“I’ll be super honest, I had total anxiety for 48 hours before [filming] because I was like, ‘Can I do this? Am I going to pull this off?’ It’s a lot of pressure,” she told People at the time.
Her fears were soon put to rest.
She shared that the current cast is “phenomenal.”
“It’s for them to make it their own,” Hewitt shared. “And for me to stand by like a proud mom and say, ‘It’s yours now, take it and run and enjoy.’”
The “Holiday Junkie” star also expressed her gratitude for being able to return to the franchise nearly 30 years later.
“As a female in Hollywood, in your 40s, sometimes you can feel forgotten about,” Hewitt admitted, noting that she felt “really touched emotionally and honored that Sony would have me back, that the franchise would have me back, that Jen wanted me back, and that the audience wanted me back. It really felt like an honor. Stepping into her shoes again was really fun.”
Hewitt’s character has also found its way into her home life. Julie James has an iconic line in the original movie, yelling at the killer, “What are you waiting for, huh?”
Her youngest son “now says it daily.”
Hewitt told Screen Rant in an interview published Tuesday: “Just the other day, he was standing on the stairs, and he goes, ‘Mommy, I want to go to the park. What are you waiting for, huh?’”
“And he just says these things, and now for dinner, he’ll be like, ‘I’m hungry. What are you waiting for, huh?’ And it’s hilarious, literally me on the floor laughing every time. So I love it. It’s been great, and I just appreciate that there’s a line that means that much to people out there.”
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” hits theaters on Friday.
