“Val and I went through a really, really rough season in our marriage in 2020, and that’s when the pandemic hit,” Candace said on Tuesday’s episode of her “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast.”
“It was going south quickly,” she explained, “and we were like, ‘I don’t know, don’t think … we’re gonna make it through.’”
The actress, who has been married to the retired NHL player, 51, for 29 years, revealed that their three children helped save their marriage.
“At one point, Lev, Maks and Natasha, but Lev was the one leading the charge. He came up to us and said, ‘We’d like to talk to you guys,’” Candace recalled. “Val and I sat down and Lev preached, like, a 45-minute sermon on marriage to us. Just had his Bible open on the couch and just talked about it.”
“And I’ll never forget, ‘cause he said, ‘You know, I know I haven’t been married. I’m just a young kid. And so it’s probably hard to take marriage advice from someone this young [who] never experienced it before. But I don’t need to be married to know what the word of God says,’” she added.
Candace said that 25-year-old Lev had “such a calm voice that had so much wisdom behind it” when he sat his parents down.
“He looked us straight in the eye and individually asked me and then asked Val, ‘Have you done everything you can? Is there one step of grace, is there just some bit of more grace you can give? Is there one more act of kindness in you that you could give to try to reconcile?’” Candace shared, adding, “When we walked away from that and Val and I were like, ‘Huh, We raised some pretty good kids.”
The former child star called Lev’s advice “the pivotal moment” in her marriage to Valeri that “really changed” their dynamic.
“There was a lot more to it, but it’s a whole different scenario when your kids sit you down to have a talk and go, ‘Are you being as mature as you can be?’ I’m so grateful to Lev and Maks and Natasha,” she said. “They were so supportive of everything.”
Lev, who was on the podcast episode with his mom, explained that his decision to get involved in his parents’ marriage “came from a point of love.”
“Even when my siblings and I talked about it, it was like, man we really want more than anything for our parents to be together, but let’s get to the matter of fact,” he stated. “It’s only gonna happen through Jesus. So that was all we could point them to.”
Candace married Valeri in 1996. They went on to welcome Lev, Natasha, 26, and Maks, 23.
For the couple’s 29th wedding anniversary last month, Candace shared throwback photos from their first date after meeting at a charity hockey game in 1994.
“31 years ago we went on our first official date at his practice rink in Fredericton, New Brunswick,” Candace wrote, noting that her “Full House” co-star Dave Coulier introduced them at the game four months earlier.
“Happy anniversary to my love and best friend forever,” Candace added.
