Mets’ Carlos Mendoza goes berserk during Subway Series ejection
Carlos Mendoza’s displeasure with called strikes late in Sunday’s Subway Series finale got the Mets skipper sent to the clubhouse early.
Mendoza was tossed from the Mets’ 6-4 loss to the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth after he loudly disagreed with home plate ump John Bacon’s call on a 0-1 and 0-2 pitch to Luis Torrens that appeared to miss the strike zone both times at Citi Field.

The SNY broadcast showed Mendoza yelling toward Bacon after the first strike call for several moments and getting more animated before the at-bat continued. Mendoza’s blood pressure spiked again after Bacon called another low strike to complete the strikeout.
An irate Mendoza ran onto the field and before he could even start yelling at Bacon to his face, the home plate umpire tossed the Mets’ skipper from the game.
Mendoza proceeded to kick dirt on home plate before turning back toward Bacon and continuing to yell at him.
A second umpire was able to create some space between the two and Mendoza eventually walked back to the clubhouse.
Mendoza was given a standing ovation from the Mets fans at Citi Field as he walked off the field following the confrontation.
The MLB website’s Gameday stats appeared to show that both pitches to Torrens that sparked Mendoza’s anger were low and outside the strike zone.
Starling Marte grounded out for the second out of the inning and Francisco Lindor struck out to end the game.
The loss prevented the Mets from sweeping the Yankees during the Fourth of July holiday weekend and each team has won three games apiece against the other this season.
The Yankees snapped a six-game losing streak with the win on Sunday in Queens after they dropped four straight to the Blue Jays coming into the weekend and fell twice to the Mets to start the Subway Series.
