Rose Byrne Thanks Absent Husband Bobby Cannavale During Hilarious Golden Globes Speech: “We’re Getting A Bearded Dragon, And He Went To A Reptile Expo In New Jersey”
Apple TV’s beloved comedy Platonic may not have been nominated at the 83rd Golden Globes, which aired Sunday, January 11 on CBS, but stars Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne won big and delivered two of the night’s funniest speeches.
Shortly after Rogen won for his role in The Studio, Byrne took home the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

“I didn’t prepare anything, but I didn’t sing in this movie, guys,” Byrne said with a chuckle. “Thank you so much. This is such a shock. Thank you so much. I share this with Mary Bronstein, my writer/ director. She wrote this unbelievable screenplay, and she wanted me to do it, and I can’t believe that you wanted me to do it. You’re just the best. I love you.”
“My fellow nominees, I just can’t believe I’m here. Thank you so much,” Byrne said, continuing to get the earnest bits out of the way before making the room erupt into giggles. “Thank you to A24, to our brilliant producers, to Josh Safdie, Eli Bush, Ronnie Bronstein, Sarah Murphy, Ryan, everyone at A24. Thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. We shot this movie in 25 days for like $8.50 thank you so much. This is like a tiny film, so this is a huge thing to be up here.”
Byrne went on to thank her brother, who accompanied her to the ceremony as her date. And she even shouted out her mom and dad, who bought Paramount+ so they could watch the Golden Globes from Sydney. Last but certainly not least, Byrne said, “I want to thank my husband, Bobby Cannavale, who couldn’t be here because we’re getting a bearded dragon, and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey. So thank you, baby!”
Absolutely iconic. And anyone who watches Platonic knows that Byrne’s character has LOTS of experience with bearded dragons, which makes the shoutout extra hilarious.
Fellow nominees and attendees burst out laughing and cheered for Byrne, and honestly, Cannavale, too! While Cannavale may not have been in the room to support his wife, he did have a NSFW guest role in Platonic Season 2, so it’s no secret he adores Byrne and passionately supports her projects.
Congrats to her on the big win AND the bearded dragon. And here’s hoping we see her and Rogen get the awards love they deserve for Platonic one day.
