Bregman, who turns 32 in late March, had repeatedly received interest from the Yankees, Mets, Blue Jays, Cubs and Tigers, among others.

After spending the 2025 season with the Red Sox, Bregman hit the market this winter as one of the top bats in free agency.

Last offseason, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract, which included opt-outs after each of the first two seasons, with the Red Sox, ending his nine-year tenure with the Astros.

After a solid 2025 season, during which he hit .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs while making his third career All-Star team, Bregman decided to test the open market again.

He was limited to just 114 games thanks to a right quadriceps strain that sidelined him for about a month-and-a-half.

In 10 big league seasons, Bregman has put up a .272/.365/.481 slash line with 209 long balls and 43.1 wins above replacement, according to Baseball Reference.

During his time in Houston, where he won two World Series titles, Bregman received MVP votes in four separate seasons while winning a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove award at the hot corner.

Bregman’s departure leaves a hole in the Red Sox lineup.

Trevor Story is expected to be the starting shortstop in Boston come Opening Day, while youngster Marcelo Mayer will likely slide in at second or third base with Bregman off the roster.

Bregman is expected to play third base, where he has spent the bulk of his MLB career.
