Exclusive | Cop summit seeks pro-police ‘reckoning’ at ballot box

It’s a red alert.

Police officials from across the state are holding an emergency summit putting politicians on notice — either back the Blue or get voted out of office — in the wake of the election of socialist Mayor Mamdani, who once called the NYPD “wicked and corrupt,” The Post has learned.

About 300 law enforcement officers are expected to converge at Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach on Jan. 22 for the newly formed New York Public Safety Alliance to “coordinate messaging, legislative strategy and public engagement,” according to a letter sent to 180 agencies in the state.

“New York City’s newly elected administration has signaled its intention to pursue significant shifts in public safety policy, changes that many in law enforcement believe could have serious consequences for our safety and the well-being of the public we serve,” the group said.

The new alliance was created by the Detectives’ Endowment Association and will bring officers from agencies around the state together to have a unified voice, DEA President Scott Munro said.

“Every police officer and peace officer organization is invited,” Munro said. “This is our day to set the agenda to protect those who serve and those we serve. Politicians are not invited.”

There has been controversy about a new department Mayor Zohran Mamdani wants to create to send mental health workers instead of police officers on some 911 calls. AP

For city officers, the conference’s agenda will include changing bail reform and taking on the city’s diaphragm bill, which cops have said makes it more difficult to make an arrest.

Also on the agenda is influencing the appointment of parole board members and criminal court judges, and improving police officer retention, Munro said.

“Politicians have to know that thousands of law enforcement officers and their families are standing together on this,” Munro said. “If you’re a Suffolk County sheriff’s deputy or you’re protecting a park or you’re a court or probation officer, your voice will be heard. Law enforcement needs to be united.”

Louis Civell, president of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, called the summit “historic” and intended to send a message to elected officials that “we will not sit idle while public safety is jeopardized.”

“We are united and ready to engage the public to ensure a much-needed reckoning occurs at the ballot box this November,” he said. “We will vote, we will campaign, we will use every tool at our disposal in order to elect candidates that will prioritize the safety of the public and protect the lives of our brave law enforcement officers.

Correction Officer Benevolent Association President Benny Boscio said he was “proud” to be part of the fledgling alliance.

“Given the sweeping public safety changes that are anticipated under this new New York City mayoral administration and many policy makers across New York State, it is imperative that our collective voices are heard and our common goals are achieved,” Boscio said.

“No matter what shield we wear, we all put ourselves in harm’s way every day to maintain public safety and we all face many of the same challenges from staffing shortages to worsening working conditions.”

During his 2020 Assembly run, Mamdani called the NYPD “racist, anti-queer and a major threat to public safety” and a “wicked and corrupt” agency.

But Mamdani was criticized this week for his slow response to a pair of fatal police-involved shootings.

The shootings happened hours apart on Thursday and Mamdani was quickly briefed about them by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch but didn’t release a statement until 16 hours later, insiders said.

And the statement stoked anger because it appeared to imply wrongdoing by police by stressing an “internal investigation” when it is policy for the NYPD’s force investigation division to probe all shootings where cops kill members of the public.

“I know many are eager for answers,” he wrote on X. “The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation — I will work with Commissioner Tisch to ensure this is as thorough and swift as possible.”

Critics have bashed Mamdani’s scheme to create a Department of Community Safety and send civilian mental health professionals instead of cops to respond to some emergency calls.

It’s not clear if City Council will approve creation of the agency, which has a price tag of about $1 billion.

President of the National Association of Police Organizations Mick McHale plans to address the negative portrayal of officers by elected officials at the roundtable, he said.

“We’re seeing once again that law enforcement is being demonized,” said McHale. “ We cannot have one more law enforcement officer sacrificed anywhere because of the false narrative being spewed by members of the elected party in New York and nationally.”
