It’s a decision that comes less than two weeks after Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said that they wanted a resolution soon for the situation involving their second baseman, who inked a $116.5 extension in April that runs through 2031 with a player option the final year.

“It never ended up getting that close,” Hazen told MLB.com of possible deals for Marte. “Just sort of reaffirming what I’ve been saying the entire offseason, like my expectation was this wasn’t going to happen. I felt like I had to do my job just to listen to what people had to say. He’s a superstar player for us, and has been for a long time, and is going to continue to be.”

The Diamondbacks’ decision could have ripple effects for Alex Bregman’s market, too, as Heyman previously reported that if Arizona signed Bregman, Marte could’ve been an option for the Red Sox.

He added Friday that the Diamondbacks could still be in on Bregman even after deciding to keep Marte, though.

Marte, 32, earned a second Silver Slugger Award during the 2025 season after launching 28 homers, collecting 72 RBIs and hitting .283 with a .893 OPS.

So now he’ll be tasked with helping the Diamondbacks get back to the postseason for just the second time since he was traded to Arizona by the Mariners following the 2016 season.

He played a critical role in helping the Diamondbacks reach the World Series in 2023, hitting .329 with a .914 OPS across 17 games that postseason.

“Obviously, at this juncture of our team, we just have a lot of uncertainty in areas and just have had to explore every option to build a team,” Hazen told MLB.com. “And fully acknowledging, if we had [traded Marte] it would have weakened our team, for sure, on one side of the ball tremendously. I don’t love doing it for the human factor. I know it puts players in an awkward situation.”
