Nicholás Maduro’s capture: Letters | New York Post

The Issue: The implications of the United States’ capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.
If you care about the Venezuelan people, you should applaud President Trump’s rendition and removal of the ruthless, socialist dictator, Nicholás Maduro (“Trump’s Rx for Venezuela,” Editorial, Jan. 5).
If you care about the American people, meaning you care about removing drugs from our streets and creating stability in our hemisphere, then you should applaud Trump.

Only if you hate Trump — or you somehow support narcoterrorism — would you criticize him for removing Maduro.

I’m worried about the unintended consequences of Trump’s successful efforts to overthrow Maduro as president of Venezuela.
I worry that the unilateral action by the president, without congressional approval, will encourage other strongmen like Vladimir Putin and Xi Jingping to also overthrow leaders of neighboring countries that they don’t like.
If the world’s strongmen try to outdo each other, could it lead to World War III?

As a Vietnam War-era veteran, I’m hoping that the United States will be seeking rapid free elections in Venezuela.
Our strategy should be backing the legitimate opposition to Maduro’s forces. The sooner this happens, the better things will be for everyone involved.
I do not want to see our nation running post-Maduro Venezuela. We are not the policemen of the world nor are we nation-builders.
We need a peaceful, orderly transition. We need free and fair elections, and we need to learn from our mistakes in Iraq, Afghanistan and Southeast Asia.
The sooner order is restored in Venezuela, the quicker we can exit and the better everyone will be.

Americans awoke Saturday to news of the capture of accused narcoterrorist Maduro in an astounding show of force and precision by the US military. How fortunate are we to have in Trump a leader who is single-handedly resetting the political landscape of the Western hemisphere.
Perhaps not only will the Western hemisphere become more Democratic, but the rest of the world might benefit from the resolve of this American president.

To the tens of thousands who fled Venezuela and cheered for the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife, think again.
Sure, Maduro is a bad actor; it’s not debatable. But when it comes to corrupt governance, Trump is a master. He worships wealth, as do despotic leaders like Maduro and Vladimir Putin.
To welcome the Trump administration to invade Venezuela could be, in the long term, as bad or worse for Venezuelans as what they have now.
David Kahn

For years, the Venezuelan people have endured economic collapse, shortages of food and medicine, political repression and widespread human rights violations. Millions were forced to flee their country.
Their voices are essential in helping determine whether international or US-based judicial action is appropriate and what justice should look like.

Nicolás Maduro was like a squatter who illegally took over someone’s house when they were away on vacation. He robbed the Venezuelan people of their hopes and dreams, while they tried to survive under his totalitarian reign of terror.
If anyone believes that this miscreant is worth supporting, and that President Trump didn’t have probable cause to remove him, they should have their head examined.

The president has stated that the United States will “run” Venezuela and believes the Venezuelan people will welcome him with open arms and cheerfully donate their oil reserves to him. Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle aren’t quite as optimistic as he is.
This promises to be a very interesting year for Donald Trump.
