Is It Over For Angie and Will in ‘Will Trent’ Season 4? Ramón Rodríguez Weighs In On Their Future: “These Two People Will Always Care About Each Other Deeply”

Will Trent fans who are all in on Will (Ramón Rodríguez) and Angie (Erika Christensen) may want to avert their eyes. At least for a little while.

After Season 3 of ABC‘s hit drama series ended with Angie and Will — who have had an on-again, off-again relationship over the course of the first three seasons — with considerable distance between them due to her expecting a baby with Seth (Scott Foley), Rodriguez is warning viewers who want them back together as soon as possible to slow their roll.

“I think because of their history, you know, he is happy for her,” the actor told DECIDER during a recent sit-down ahead of Season 4. ” It is tough, but I think him seeing her happy means a lot and I think he does care. These two people will always care about each other deeply.”

For Rodriguez — who also serves as the director of Season 4’s first episode, “Speaking of Sharks” — exploring this new and challenging relationship between his own character and the person who he knows best (and vice versa), it’s just more to play with as actors and storytellers.

“Look, it’s complicated. She’s got her new partner, Seth, and she’s got a baby. It’s something that Will obviously always wanted,” Rodriguez said. “It’s something that she also really wanted, whether she was very outward about it. But both growing up in the foster care system and in group homes, they knew the importance of what it is to have security and to start a family.”

Fans who are holding out hope that things between Seth and Angie could turn sour or that Angie will see the light and run through an airport or make some grand gesture to get Will back shouldn’t completely lose faith, Rodriguez says, but maybe just “let it simmer” for the time being. Angie has bigger priorities right now and will be focusing more on diapers and keeping a newborn alive than her her will-they-won’t-they with her oldest friend.

Additionally, Rodriguez says there’s more for the writers and actors to have fun with as they steer through uncharted territory for the characters. Do these two work better as companions than lovers? Should Angie even concern herself with anything other than the baby on the way? That’s going to be what Season 4 explores.

“Is there more to their relationship than just friendship? It’s tough,” he explained. “Again, she’s starting a family. I think it really becomes about how do you navigate these new waters, knowing you’ve got to work alongside each other from time to time, knowing how much you care about each other? Those things typically take time to be able to get to a healthy state.”

Even better, the break from Angie and Will’s constant back and forth gives them the opportunity to bring some new potential love interests in for Will to flirt with, albeit badly.

“What I will say is there will be some old romances and there will be some new romances that will come through this season, Rodriguez said coyly. “All of that will be interesting to see.”
