3 killed as 13 hit in second mass shooting in Philly in days

Three people were killed and 10 others wounded in a mass shooting in Philadelphia early Monday — less than two days after eight others were injured in another similar attack in the City of Brotherly Love.

“This is coward stuff,” Philly’s top cop, Commissioner Kevin Bethel, said at the scene where 13 people as young as 15 were hit just before 1 a.m. in a gun battle near a party.

“Just individuals just shooting randomly into houses, into cars, children out here,” Bethel raged of the deadly attack, which left another teen fighting for life after being shot twice in the head.

“This is coward, wannabe thug stuff.”

The shooting happened after a party on the narrow block quickly grew and eventually got out of hand, a neighbor told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“When the party gets crazy, that’s usually when the shooting starts,” said Tiffany McDaniels, who saw a young girl passed out with a bloody leg and a young man also bleeding profusely.

The three fatal victims were a 19-year-old man shot in the head, a 23-year-old man shot in the chest and a 24-year-old man blasted numerous times in the back, according to Philadelphia police.

A 19-year-old man who suffered two gunshot wounds to the head is currently in critical condition.

Bethel said police believe there was an exchange of gunfire. It’s unclear how many people were involved. One armed person was taken into custody, but it’s unclear if he squeezed the trigger.

Issues on the block earlier in the weekend led to a law enforcement presence, but when cops had to respond to a priority call nearby, the shooting started, Bethel said.

“Reports of around 40 individuals may be out here, but those numbers can surge particularly when you’re on a block of this size,” Bethel said.

“People go in, they go out, they see the police officers, they back in, clearly there was something on the block.”

The bloodshed early Monday followed another mass shooting outside a lounge that wounded eight people early Saturday, according to ABC 6 Philadelphia.

Two 25-year-old women and a 27-year-old woman were shot, as well as five men between the ages of 28 and 43 years old at the Elements Restaurant Bar and Lounge, the station reported.

Overall, there were six homicides over the holiday weekend.

“I know this is going to be a very difficult weekend, folks gonna wake up and hear about a lot of the incidents that happened over the weekend, but we are not going back,” Bethel said.
