Alan Cumming is on board for the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel!
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at an intimate brunch for Traitors at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 15, the Scottish actor and television host, 60, confirmed he will be reprising his role as Sandy Frink in the follow-up to the 1997 comedy.
“It’s very exciting,” Cumming tells PEOPLE. “It’s been really fun actually talking to Robin [Schiff], the writer and Lisa [Kudrow] as well about it.”

The original film saw the Friends star, 61, and Mira Sorvino as the titular characters: best friends who had not accomplished all that they wanted to by the time their 10-year high school reunion took place.
Hijinks ensued when the ladies did their best to impress their former classmates.
Sorvino, 57, announced via social media in January that she and Kudrow would also be serving as executive producers this time around.
Cumming tells PEOPLE he “can’t really say much without giving too much away” in terms of the plot, but that the release will arrive in 2027 — the year of the film’s 30th anniversary.

“Obviously everyone’s still in each other’s lives,” he says, “But it may be in a different way… It’s nice to think of those characters still being old friends.”
Things are already in full swing, according to Cumming, who tells PEOPLE, “Next year we’d shoot it and it would come out the following year, which would be 30 years since the [first] movie came out.”

“So that’s kind of appropriate,” he says of the timing, admitting that it’s “hilarious and also terrifying.”
Cumming adds he’s stayed close with Kudrow throughout the years. “I see Lisa,” he says. “We keep in touch and talk, sporadically.”
When it comes to the rest of the cast, the X2 actor tells PEOPLE, “Once in a while I run into Justin Theroux. Or, you know, Camryn Manheim I see a little bit.”

The sequel will be directed by Tim Federle, and is set to start filming in June, with Los Angeles–area locations being considered, The Hollywood Reporter previously said.
In February 2023, Cumming told PEOPLE he would be “totally game” to reprise his role if he were given the opportunity.
“I thought it was great. I mean, there’s been speculation about it and rumors about it having a sequel for the last 25 years, I have to say,” he said. “But yeah, totally. I’d be absolutely game.”
The Traitors is available to stream on Peacock.
