- Idris tells PEOPLE that the brand is an homage to his mom, who “taught me about the importance of elegance”
Damson Idris has now been to the Met Gala three times, but his 2025 appearance is the most meaningful yet.
Not only is the English actor, 33, gearing up for the release of the blockbuster sports movie F1 , costarring Brad Pitt, Idris is celebrating the red carpet debut of his new luxury jewelry brand, DIDRIS.
“I’m at a point in my life where everything I do, I’m thinking about legacy and thinking about family,” the Snowfall actor told PEOPLE exclusively ahead of the Met Gala. “And this brand, DIDRIS, is a homage to my mother, and really picking up where she left off with her dream and passion, which she sacrificed to raise all of us.”
Idris’s mother, who the actor calls “an absolute hustler and an entrepreneur,” would buy gold in her native Nigeria and then travel across Europe to sell it. “She’d fly back to Nigeria and she’d invest that profit into real estate and bettering the livelihood of my family,” he shared. Eventually, the family moved to the U.K., where Idris was born.

Idris recalled having an interest in jewelry from an early age, “stealing” pieces from his mom’s jewelry box until she “finally introduced me to jewelry and really taught me about the importance of elegance.”
“DIDRIS is a homage to my mother and me really picking up where she left off with her dream and passion, which she sacrificed to raise all of us,” he explained of the brand.
The Met Gala seemed like the perfect opportunity for DIDRIS to have its big moment. “I made this collection because I wanted to have a brand that represented how I dress and the type of jewelry I buy and I wanted to exist in a space that people like me don’t usually exist,” Idris said.

The 2025 Met Gala theme, as well as its corresponding exhibition, was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” It takes inspiration from guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, which explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”
“When I heard of the theme and just how it resonates with so many cultures, not just in Africa, but in American dandyism too, and even in the U.K., I knew it was going to be a fun, inventive night,” Idris said of the event, which was co-chaired by fashion powerhouses Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour.
The actor added, “And I’m just so happy that the Met Gala are taking this moment. It’s not even a chance, we know it’s going to be fantastic.”
