The Academy is replacing Oscars that were lost in the Los Angeles fires.
Rick Carter — an acclaimed production designer responsible for films such as Forrest Gump, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Polar Express, and The Fabelmans — lost his two Academy Awards when his home was destroyed during the natural disaster that devastated the city in early 2025.
On Monday, April 21, The Academy — the organization responsible for the Oscars — took to Instagram to reveal that Carter’s awards had been replaced.
“Today we had the honor of replacing the Oscars that legendary production designer Rick Carter won for AVATAR and LINCOLN — awards he lost when the LA fires destroyed his home earlier this year,” the organization wrote.
The post continued: “Presented by Academy CEO Bill Kramer, these new statuettes stand in for more than what was lost. They honor a visionary whose work has defined the visual language of modern film — from the Americana of FORREST GUMP to the sweeping intimacy of THE FABELMANS.”
“Rick doesn’t just design sets — he builds worlds we return to again and again,” it concluded.
Carter won his first Oscar in 2010 for his work on Avatar. The award for Lincoln followed in 2013.

Avatar was nominated for nine awards at the 2010 ceremony. The Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography. Lincoln snagged 12 nominations. On top of Carter’s win, Daniel Day-Lewis took home the Oscar for Best Actor
Over the years, Carter has been nominated for five Oscars in the Best Production Design Category. His first nomination was for Forrest Gump in 1994.
Carter also secured nominations for his work on 2011’s War Horse and, most recently, 2022’s The Fabelmans.

The devastating wildfires started on January 7, 2025 and raged for most of the month, causing destruction across the city.
Many events were delayed due to the fires, including the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, premieres and more.
Awards ceremonies such as the Grammys found ways to help raise proceeds for those impacted by the fires. At the 2025 Oscars, several Los Angeles firefighters took the stage to receive a commendation and a standing ovation from the audience.
