If you’re looking to upgrade your daily regimen, we’ve curated some of the most star-loved options on the market below (and asked a dermatologist to answer some frequently asked questions about moisturizers, too).

Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream
Avène

This French drugstore staple has garnered a big following stateside. Gwyneth Paltrow and Hailey Bieber have both posted about it on Instagram Stories, with the latter even calling it a product she “couldn’t live without.”

Sofia Richie also incorporates it into her “simple and clean” skincare routine, telling Vogue:
“This is like my holy grail. I always apply it under my makeup because I feel like my makeup is so pretty on top of this.”

Even A-list plastic surgeon Dr. Jason Diamond swears by the stuff, calling it “quality” in a Page Six Style interview.

The multipurpose skin barrier cream has up to 45 different uses, per the brand, from moisturizing skin to soothing razor burns and post-laser hair removal irritation.

Page Six Style’s review: “I have fairly sensitive skin, so I tend to play it safe with my routine. My dermatologist recommended a different Avène moisturizer, Tolérance Soothing Skin Recovery Cream, a couple of years ago, and I’ve used it every day since. It feels gentle but effective.” — Hannah Southwick, Associate Commerce Editor

“Like Hannah, I discovered Avène through my dermatologist (we see the same one!); she recommended Hydrance Rich Hydrating Cream, since my skin’s very dry, sensitive and acne-prone. That was over a decade ago, and I still swear by it to this day. It’s fairly pricey, but a little goes a very long way since it’s so rich. Nothing I’ve tried is as good at protecting the skin barrier, soothing irritation and locking in hydration.” — Elana Fishman, Style & Shopping Director

L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect Midnight Cream
L’Oréal Paris

While Bethenny Frankel has put plenty of drugstore beauty buys on the map over the years, this just might be her biggest viral find.

She dubbed it the “richest bitch drugstore moisturizer” on Instagram in 2023, saying: “It looks, feels, smells and is just like a $500 cream. I’m not kidding, you will know the second you try it.”

The self-proclaimed accidental beauty influencer has doubled (and quadrupled) down on her love for the product in the years since, calling it “so elite” and “beyond” on TikTok in 2024.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream
Charlotte Tilbury

Charlotte Tilbury’s known for making Hollywood magic, with a client list including everyone from Amal Clooney to Kate Moss. And her Magic Cream is the first step of most looks, with Tilbury telling Page Six Style it can be used “as a makeup primer as well as an incredible moisturizer.”

“George Clooney loves it just as much as Amal Clooney [does],” she revealed in 2024.

The Clooneys aren’t alone in their love for the product, as Jordan Chiles and Rita Ora both used it in their Vogue “Beauty Secrets” videos. A tub of the stuff was even spotted on Taylor Swift’s beside table in a photo from her “Reputation” album magazine.

Page Six Style’s review: “I put it on every morning under my makeup and every night before bed. It’s the perfect consistency and keeps my skin hydrated until the next morning.” — Kristin McNamara, VP of Influencer Marketing & Franchise Growth

“I have very dry skin that get especially parched in the winter, and Magic Cream is, well, magical when it comes to restoring moisture and imparting a glow.” — Elana Fishman, Style & Shopping Director

Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream
Tatcha

From pop princesses to real-life duchesses, plenty of famous folks swear by Tatcha. Selena Gomez is partial to this rich hydrator, once telling Vogue it’s “so thick and yummy that you actually don’t have to use that much of it.”

Meghan Markle also included it in a ShopMy curation of her “essential” beauty favorites — fitting, given her longtime makeup artist, Daniel Martin, is Tatcha’s head of artistry.

“The key [to natural-looking skin on the red carpet] is balance, hydration without heaviness,” Martin once told us.

U Beauty The Super Hydrator
U Beauty

Bella Hadid is hooked on this formula, which contains five different sizes of hyaluronic acid molecules.

“If anybody wants like the perfect moisturizer for the morning, this makes your skin out of control, you don’t even need to put makeup on after it,” she said in a Vogue video, pulling a bottle out of her Saint Laurent handbag.

Jennifer Aniston swears by the tinted version, dubbing it “delicious” in an E! News interview. (If it’s more tinted moisturizers you’re after, we’ve got a full guide to those, too.)

Weleda Skin Food
Weleda

Busy stars are often hungry for multipurpose products — and Skin Food delivers. The classic cream has been linked to Meghan Markle, Zooey Deschanel, Priyanka Chopra and Ashley Graham, the latter of whom once told Into the Gloss, “That s—t is like crack.”

Meanwhile, Drew Barrymore praised its powers to her talk show’s studio audience, calling it a “classic.”

“I slather it all over my face and I wake up and I look like I’ve had a facial … and I don’t have time to go get facials,” she raved.

Made with botanical ingredients like pansy, chamomile, calendula and rosemary, Skin Food can be used to moisturize hands, elbows, knees and more.

La Mer Crème de La Mer
La Mer

You can’t get much more luxe than a bottle of La Mer. Made with what the brand dubs a “miracle broth” of sea kelp, vitamin sand minerals, the classic cream has earned fans like Kendall Jenner and Charli XCX.

“This is like the bougiest step in not only my skincare routine, but my life,” the latter told Vogue, saying she feels like her skin “just drinks this up.”

And Teyana Taylor and Ariana Grande both used the Soft Cream version in their own “Beauty Secrets” installments.

Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream
Nordstrom

Also on the splurge-worthy side? Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream, which features the brand’s proprietary TCF8 blend of amino acids, high-grade vitamins and peptides.

Victoria Beckham has teamed up with the brand on her own formulas, while Courteney Cox, Tate McRae and Eva Longoria have shouted out the Rich Cream over the years.

Hailey Bieber told followers she’d emptied multiple bottles of the stuff, and eagle-eyed fans also spotted some on Jennifer Aniston’s Instagram Story.

It’s equally popular with fictional famous folks, and the brand’s blue-and-gold bottles have popped up in “Challengers” and “Succession.”

Philosophy Hope in a Jar Smooth-Glow Multi-Tasking Moisturizer
Philosophy

While Oprah’s praised plenty of products over the years, only a handful made the cut for her “Ultimate Favorite Things” list in 2010 — including the original version of Hope in a Jar.

“It’s hands down the best moisturizer I’ve ever used,” she raved of the cream, now formulated with hydrating hyaluronic acid and resurfacing glycolic acid.

Dr. Barbara Sturm Face Cream
Bloomingdale’s

The media mogul’s also a big Barbara Sturm fan, so much so that she invested in the company in 2023. She’s hardly alone, as Tinashe and Lea Michele both slathered some on in their Vogue “Beauty Secrets” videos.

Issa Rae used the Darker Skin Tones Face Cream in her own beauty routine video, saying, “This immediately appealed to me.”

La Roche Posay Toleraine Double Repair Face Moisturizer
La Roche-Posay

Seeking something that’s oil- and fragrance-free? Stars like Brittany Mahomes, Keke Palmer and Paige DeSorbo reach for La Roche-Posay.

“It’s buttery,” the “Summer House” alum told E! News. “It’s not a serum. It’s kind of thick. I really do love this brand.”

FAQs

When should you use moisturizer?

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman tells us she recommends moisturizing twice a day following your cleansing, toning and serum steps, since topical products “should always be applied from lightest/thinnest to heaviest/thickest.”

“Thinner formulas, like serums, have smaller molecules that penetrate the skin more quickly,” she explains. “If thinner formulas are applied after thicker formulas, their smaller molecules won’t be able to move past the larger molecules.”

How do you pick the best moisturizer for you?

When picking the best moisturizer, Engelman recommends keeping your skin type and goals top of mind — and consulting a dermatologist for individualized suggestions.

But a general rule, she recommends avoiding thick and heavy creams for oily or acne-prone skin and reaching for non-comedogenic, oil-free formulas instead — such as Cetaphil Gentle Exfoliating SA Lotion.

“This lightweight moisturizer hydrates while gently exfoliating to promote cell turnover,” she says. “I like that even those with sensitive skin can use it daily without experiencing irritation.”

Medik8 Advanced Night Ceramide Signature Night Cream

Medik8

For those looking for something richer designed to target fine lines and wrinkles, she’s also a fan of Medik8’s “luxurious” Advanced Night Ceramide Signature Night Cream.

“Formulated with a multi-ceramide complex and n-acetyl glucosamine, it is clinically proven to reduce fine lines/wrinkles and firm the skin while deeply hydrating,” she says.

How much should you spend on a moisturizer?

“It all depends on the formulation,” explains Engelman. “Plenty of drugstore moisturizers are efficacious and made with high-quality ingredients, just as there are premium moisturizers that aren’t worth the price tag.”

She recommends potentially spending more if you’re seeking “transformative anti-aging results,” as opposed to a basic hydrator.

What moisturizer does Oprah use?

The original version of Philosophy Hope in a Jar Smooth-Glow Multi-Tasking Moisturizer made the cut for Oprah’s “Ultimate Favorite Things” list in 2010.
